BCL panel sweeps DUCSU polls barring VP post
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) nominated Sammilita Shikkharti Parishad panel has swept Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) polls bagging most posts of its 25-member executive committee except vice-president (VP).
On the Monday’s DU central union and hall union polls, the ruling party’s students’ wing BCL won full-panel in most of the halls and secured 23 posts in the central union.
This is the first time in the history of DUCSU polls that ruling party’s students’ wing bagged most of the posts in the polls.
One Quota reformists’ leader shocked heavyweight VP candidate of Bangladesh Chhatra League and its president Md Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon.
Bagged 9129 votes, Shovon was defeated by Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad (BSCASP) popularly known as Quota reformists VP aspirant Nurul Haque Nur, a student of English department, who secured 11062 votes.
But BCL panel nominated candidate Golam Rabbani won general secretary (GS) post, bagging 10484 votes while his nearest aspirant BSCASP’s Rashed Khan secured 6063 votes.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (VC) and DUCSU President Professor Md Akhteruzzaman announced the polls results around 3.30 am in wee hours of today.
BCL aspirant for assistant general secretary post and popular students’ leader Saddam Hussain was elected bagging 15301 votes while his nearest contender BSCASP’s Faruq Hossan got only 5896 votes.
Apart from the VP post, BSCASP’s Akhter Hossain was elected in social services secretary post.
Other elected candidates of BCL are Saad Bin Qader (liberation war secretary post), Arif Ebne Ali (science and technology secretary), BM Lipi Akhter (common room and cafeteria secretary), Shahrima Tanjina Arni (international affairs secretary), Mazharul Kabir Sayan (literary secretary), Sham-e-Noman (cultural secretary), Shakil Ahmed Tanvir (sports secretary) and Rakib Hawlader (students’ transport secretary).
The 13 elected executive members are Chibal Sangma, Nazrul Islam, Rakibul Islam Oitijhya, Tanvir Hasan Saikat, Raisa Naser, Sabrina Etee, Ishat Kasfia Ira, Nipu Islam Tanwi, Haider Mohammed Jitu, Tilottoma Shikder, Julfiqar Alam Russell and Mahmudul Hasan.
Some 43,256 students – 16,292 females and 26,964 males – of the university were eligible to vote in the election in 18 residential dormitories.
