Suprovat Paribahan bus driver remanded

Bus driver Sirajul, who killed BUP student Abrar by running over a bus in front of Jamuna Future Park at Kuril.

The case investigation officer, had sought on a 10-day remand for interrogating the man, but the court granted seven days.

A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Suprovat Paribahan bus driver Sirajul Islam on a seven-day remand in a case filed over the death of a Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student in a road accident.

Metropolitan Magistrate Devdas Chandra Adhikari passed the order after Gulshan police station Officer-in-Charge (operation) Md Aminul Islam produced Sirajul, 24, before the court.

Aminul, also the case investigation officer, had sought on a 10-day remand for interrogating the man, but the court granted seven days.

Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, an honours first year student of BUP’s International Relations Department, was run over and killed on the spot by the bus Sirajul was driving in front of Jamuna Future Park at Kuril on Tuesday morning.

Sirajul was competing with another bus and ran over Abrar when he was crossing the road using the zebra crossing. Sirajul was driving the bus with the license of light vehicles.

Police arrested Sirajul and impounded the bus soon after the incident, but Abrar’s death had sparked a protest within hours that spread across the country on Wednesday.

Abrar’s father Brig Gen (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury had filed the case with Gulshan police later on Tuesday.

OC Aminul also said that they were trying to arrest the bus owner and Sirajul’s assistant. “All of them will be brought to justice soon.”
